CJM Metals — the steel shop
Metal Fabrication in Arlington, TX
Steel is the CJM shop that came first, and it is still where most of the tools are. Driveway gates, fences, carports, pergolas, railings, security doors and the one-off brackets and frames nobody else wants to quote — drawn, cut, welded and finished on our own benches, then set on your property by the same crew that built them.
Booking it through here rather than direct makes sense when the steel touches something else we do: posts going into a slab we pour, a canopy over a pad, jacketing for an insulated line. If steel is the only trade you need, CJM Metals has the full catalogue, the design tools and the product-by-product pricing.
A shop shell and its concrete foundation
For a workshop or barndominium shell, CJM Metals designs and builds the steel building, while CJM Concrete reviews the slab. Share the building dimensions, use and project city so the foundation, openings and installation can be coordinated. A steel shell does not automatically include interior finishes, plumbing, electrical work or HVAC.
What the shop builds
Driveway gates — single swing, double swing and slide — with the posts, hinges and hardware sized to the leaf rather than to whatever was in the truck. Openers get wired and set up if you want them.
Fencing and railings: property fence, pool fence to Texas barrier code, handrails and guardrails for steps and landings, and window and door guards. Carports, pergolas and patio covers in square tube and channel, engineered for the span rather than eyeballed.
And the work that has no catalogue page: a trailer repair, a stair stringer, a rack for a shop wall, a bracket that needs to hold something heavy in a spot nothing off the shelf fits.
Why it comes after the concrete
Almost every steel job ends up anchored to something. Gate posts go into footings, carport columns land on base plates over a slab, railings core-drill into a landing. If both trades are in the job, the concrete goes in first and the steel is fabricated in the shop while it takes strength — so the second crew arrives to a surface that is ready, and nobody is standing around.
That sequence is the whole reason this site exists. Our project planner lays it out for whatever combination you tick.
Finish, and what it costs you later
Bare steel in North Texas humidity starts showing rust at the welds within a season. Everything that leaves the shop gets the mill scale knocked back, welds ground where they show, and a primer and top coat rated for outdoor exposure — or hot-dip galvanising when the job is going somewhere wet or coastal.
It is the cheapest part of the job and the one that decides whether you are repainting in three years or in fifteen.

Common questions
- Do I have to book the steel through CJM Trades?
- No. CJM Metals takes work directly and has its own site, its own design tools and its own pricing. Book through here when the job also needs concrete or insulation and you would rather deal with one company and one schedule.Full answer
- Can you set gate posts in a driveway you are also pouring?
- Yes, and that is the ideal order: the posts and sleeves go in with the concrete work, so there is no coring, no patching and no mismatched grey square in a new driveway. Tell us both on the same request.
- How long does steel work take?
- Most single items — a gate, a railing, a set of guards — run one to three days on site once fabrication is done in the shop. Fabrication time depends on the size and the material, and we give you a date in the written estimate.Full answer
